TREBLAB has been making waves in the audio industry since 2015. Fast becoming a household name, they’re dominating the market with their affordable products offering premium features. Today we’re taking a closer look at the TREBLAB HD77. Unboxing & First Thoughts

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: high-quality packaging makes an excellent first impression. TREBLAB continues to hit the mark when it comes to packaging their items in a way that is simple but effective. Opening the box, the first thing you see is the HD77 speaker itself and, if you’ve ever owned a JBL, you’ll immediately think “this looks familiar”. Inspecting the speaker, it’s solid and free of any manufacturing flaws. When it comes to budget-priced speakers, you’ll usually be able to tell very early on that “this is cheap” but you don’t get that with this speaker. This is certainly a top contender in the best portable Bluetooth speakers market!

Along with the HD77 speaker, you’ll find a 3.5mm AUX cable, a USB to USB-C charging cable, a carrying strap, a carabiner, and the user manual. The cables feature a rubberized finish and are 2 feet in length.

Speaker Design

The TREBLAB HD77 is designed as a portable Bluetooth speaker, and the included carrying strap or carabiner further adds to this portability by allowing you to attach it to a backpack or even hang it from a tree branch. Weighing in at 1.37 pounds, the speaker isn’t particularly lightweight for its size but is still compact enough to carry around (7 x 3 x 3 inches).

Looking closer at the build quality, the HD77 offers many familiar features of the JBL speakers like the black mesh fabric body, a water-tight enclosure for connectors, and passive bass radiators at either end. The mesh design means that it’s very easy to grip, even when wet. Added to this, the speaker’s splashproof and shockproof design makes it the perfect poolside speaker.

The TREBLAB HD77 is the middle-sized speaker in the range. If you like what the HD77 has to offer but you’re looking for something more compact, check out the TREBLAB HD7. Alternatively, if you’re wanting something with more size and power, then have a look at the TREBLAB HD-Max. We plan to review the HD-Max in the near future, so be sure to check back in for that to see how it compares!

Speaker Controls & Connectors

Moving on to speaker controls and connectors, the TREBLAB HD77 features just four multi-function buttons on the top of the speaker. These include power ON/OFF, previous track/ Volume down, play/pause, and Next track/ volume up. The HD77 doesn’t have any battery level indicator on the speaker itself, but this information can be viewed on your paired device.

The speaker also features LED rings that glow in a variety of colors depending on what’s happening. When powered on, the LED rings shine blue and flash when pairing. When powered off the LED rings shine red and flash when at maximum volume. Charging your device turns the LEDs to purple while connecting via the AUX cable will see the LEDs change to green.

Looking at the connectors, you’ll find a 3.5mm AUX cable port for wired listening, a USB-C port for charging, and a hard-reset button – all housed underneath the water-tight enclosure. At the bottom of the speaker, you’ll find the anchor for connecting your carrying strap. A built-in microphone is located on the top of the speaker, below the mesh fabric body.

Sound Quality

A common concern when it comes to portable Bluetooth speakers is whether or not the sound quality is adequate. While they’re not going to deliver the same experience as a wired speaker would, they certainly pack in quite a punch! The TREBLAB HD77 takes it one step further, delivering the same audio quality you’d expect to hear from high-end brands at a fraction of the cost. At under $100, the HD77 offers excellent value for money. While it won’t be adequate for use as a party speaker, it will be perfect around a campsite, the poolside, or even just for ambiance in your living room.

The TREBLAB HD77 features two 12.5W drivers that offer a 360-degree sound. Mids are forward and clear, while treble is bright. The low-end is supported by the HD77 speaker’s DualBass technology which delivers a punchy and tight bass. However, given its frequency range of 100Hz – 16KHz, some may find the bass lacking. If you’re already familiar with portable Bluetooth speakers, you’ll know this is a common aspect of these types of compact speakers, regardless of their price.

In terms of volume, the TREBLAB HD77  might be small but it’s a pretty loud Bluetooth speaker! While the sound does distort slightly at max volume, you will rarely (if ever) listen at this volume anyways. As previously mentioned, the HD77 is designed to be a compact speaker you can throw into your backpack and take along with you on your hike. It’s not designed to be a crowd-inducing party speaker, so make sure your expectations are realistic. Using the speaker as it was intended to be used, the TREBLAB HD77 performs brilliantly. It offers excellent volume levels for a pool party, cookout, or even a weekend at the lakehouse.

Technical Specs & Features

Shockproof & Splashproof

If you’re going to be taking your speaker out on hikes or along to a pool party, then it goes without saying that the speaker will need to be able to withstand an accidental drop or a splash of water. Thankfully, the TREBLAB HD77 has you covered here with an IPX6 rating. If you’re unfamiliar with these ratings, the IPX6 rating means it’s not only shockproof but can also withstand splashes (and high-pressure sprays from any angle). It should be noted that the speaker should not be submerged in water and is technically water-resistant rather than fully waterproof.

Battery Life & Charging

As with any portable speaker, the battery life will depend on the volume at which you listen. The TREBLAB HD77 boasts a maximum of up to 20 hours of playtime at a 35% volume level and 9 hours at 100% volume. It’s important to bear in mind that you will likely never play your speaker at 100% volume as this is incredibly loud and doesn’t offer the best sound quality either. We tested at 35% volume and this level is more than adequate to bring atmosphere to your campsite.

For charging, you can either use the included USB to USB-C cable, or a 5V DC, 0.5-2A USB-C cellphone charger. Charging takes around 4 hours.

Wireless Connectivity & True Wireless Stereo (TWS)

The TREBLAB HD77 was recently upgraded to include Bluetooth 5.0. This means a faster and more stable connection. The HD77 also features True Wireless Stereo (TWS) which allows you to pair two TREBLAB HD77 speakers together for a true stereo sound.

AUX Connection

If you’d prefer listening via a wired connection, the TREBLAB HD77 offers a 3.5mm AUX connection. Using the AUX connection means an even longer battery life too.

Built-In Mic & Phone Calls

When pairing, you’ll have the option to connect media audio, call audio, or both. The integrated microphone on the HD77 means you’ll be able to answer calls and manage the audio directly through your speaker. Along with upgrading its Bluetooth version, TREBLAB has also recently upgraded the HD77’s microphone to ensure better audio quality.

How to Pair your TREBLAB HD77 Bluetooth Speaker

Step 1: Ensure that the AUX cable is not plugged in.

Step 2: Press and hold the power button for 3 seconds to turn the speaker on. You should hear a sound and the LED rings will flash blue.

Step 3: Scan for Bluetooth devices on your smart device and select TREBLAB HD77.

Step 4: When asked to confirm pairing on your smart device, select “pair”.

Step 5: If a password is required, enter “0000”.

Step 6: Upon successful pairing, the blue LED rings will stop flashing and glow continuously.

If you experience any issues with pairing, ensure that the earphones are within 30ft of your device and that they are not paired with any other devices. The HD77 can only be paired with 1 device at a time. Disconnect the speaker and unpair/remove the HD77 from the pairing list on your device and try again. If the problem still persists, try resetting the speaker to factory settings. To do this, press and hold the Volume + and Volume – buttons together for 3-5 seconds.

TWS (True Wireless Stereo) Pairing

Step 1: Pair the speaker you’d like to be the ‘master speaker’ to your device and then turn the speaker off.

Step 2: Turn off the Bluetooth on your device.

Step 3: Place the two TREBLAB HD77 speakers next to each other and turn both speakers on.

Step 4: Double-press the power button on the master speaker. The LED rings should begin to flash blue and green. This means it is pairing with the slave speaker.

Step 5: Turn on the Bluetooth on your device. The speakers should connect automatically.

Step 6: Upon successful pairing, the blue LED rings on the master speaker will flash slowly.

Conclusion

The TREBLAB HD77 is a solid portable Bluetooth speaker that can easily be thrown in your backpack and used for a range of activities. Its shockproof and splashproof quality means it’s perfect to take along with you on a hike, camping, or even the poolside. For a Bluetooth speaker under 100 dollars, it certainly punches well above its weight in terms of features and sound quality.

While it might not have the same waterproof rating or frequency range as JBL speakers, it makes up for it in a better Bluetooth version, an integrated mic, dual speakers, and 360° Sound (which the latest JBL speakers all lack). With its premium features and affordable price point, the TREBLAB HD77 certainly deserves a spot on a list of the best portable Bluetooth Speakers.

TL;DR

The TREBLAB HD77 is a powerful and durable Bluetooth speaker that delivers high-quality sound. It has a sturdy construction and is water-resistant, making it suitable for outdoor use. With a long battery life and multiple connectivity options, it offers great value for money. However, the bass can be overpowering at higher volumes, and it lacks certain features like built-in voice assistant integration and FM radio. Some users experienced occasional connectivity issues, and the user manual could be more detailed.
