What is a Computer Speaker?
A computer speaker is specifically made to be used with a desktop or laptop for personal use.
Gaming, music-making, or movie-watching-specific features and specifications can be found on computer speakers. We’ll talk more about the various designs, dimensions, and configurations of computer speakers in the section that follows.
How Do Speakers Work?
In order to reproduce sound, speakers use an electrical current that is passed through a voice coil to create magnetic fields that push and pull on a speaker’s cone. A speaker is housed inside a cabinet, which is constructed from a variety of woods and plastics. Depending on your intended uses for your new computer speaker setup, the cabinet material is a crucial consideration that affects the speaker’s tone.
Additionally, the speaker’s parts have a big impact on the overall sound quality. Instead of using a single speaker driver to transmit all frequencies, some models have both tweeters and woofers. This results in a clearer, better-defined listening experience. Read on to learn more about what makes up a speaker:
- All low-frequency energy is handled by the woofer driver, so adding a dedicated woofer will enhance bass response and transmission.
- Between the Woofer and the Tweeter, there is a midrange driver. This element gives your sound all the warmth and body.
- All representations of high frequencies are handled by the tweeter. As a result, the Tweeter gives your listening experience clarity.
Do small speakers produce high-quality sound?
Your experience with sound quality will be impacted by a speaker’s size in a number of different ways. The size of the speaker cone itself will have the biggest impact on the speaker system’s overall ‘feel’ and low-end response. In comparison to small, lighter, flimsily built cones, larger, heavier speakers will carry a much more richly textured sound and push the air much more effectively. They contain smaller and less expensive speakers in cabinets made of lighter, less expensive, and less resonant wood and plastics.
Our Selection of the Best Computer Speakers
1. Audioengine A2+ Wireless Speakers

Specs & Features

Sensitivity | >95dB |
Power | 60W |
Speaker Dimensions: | 2.75” Woofers and 0.75” Tweeters |

The Texas-based audio company Audioengine is well-known in the industry for consistently producing high-quality goods. Their affiliation with other reliable audio, music, and technology businesses only strengthens their reputation. Audioengine produces Bluetooth speakers, headphone amplifiers, and various audio accessories in addition to high-quality speaker systems.
Based on their previously created A2 Speaker system, they have created the A2+ Bluetooth Wireless Computer Speaker setup. The A2+ comes with extra features like USB input and Bluetooth connectivity options, which let users use the internal DAC.
Sound Quality and Performance
Every speaker’s sound quality is its most important component, and the Audioengine A2+ speakers deliver exceptional results given their tiny size. There are numerous ways to connect your device to the speaker using the A2+.
The A2+ speakers can deliver some serious power when compared to the majority of medium-sized smart speakers. Compared to medium-sized smart speakers, you get a little less bass, but the overall sound quality is much better. The extension struggles below 100 Hz, which is very similar to the A2+ speaker and medium-sized ones, but the A2+ does so without adding audible DSP artifacts.
There is a lower midrange bump, but the treble and midrange are both fairly good. The bump doesn’t harm the presentation, but it was likely an attempt to make the presentation a little heavier in a system that lacks a little bass. In response, Audioengine continues to produce a subwoofer that works well with the A2+ speaker.
Connectivity Options
The simplest method for connecting to a PC is through the USB port on the device’s back because it eliminates the need for an additional ADC step in the signal chain. When you connect the USB cable, your PC ought to detect the device right away and be prepared for use.
Your laptop or smartphone can use Bluetooth to implement additional methods of connectivity. With Bluetooth version 5, which offers better sound quality, a wider range, and longer battery life, the A2+ speaker is equipped. As expected with Bluetooth 5, the connection was very strong and did not drop within 60 meters when tested with a smartphone.
What You Will Receive
- Pair of Audioengine A2+ Wireless Powered Speakers
- 2m Speaker wire, power supply, and cord
- USB cable
- 1.5m Mini-jack audio cable
- Microfiber speaker bags and cable bags
- Setup guide
Conclusion
The Audioengine A2+ speakers are compact speakers intended for use as computer speakers or in smaller spaces. They shouldn’t be compared to large floor speakers or flat screens. All things considered, they are very musical and perform excellently for their cost and size.
These speakers are not intended to fill a living room with sound, but in a smaller space, such as a bedroom or office, they appear much larger than they actually are. Keep in mind that the midrange will be heard more and the bass less in rooms with larger speakers. Look at Audioengine’s A5+ speakers, which are reviewed later in this list, if you want something a little more potent with a slight improvement in audio quality and Bluetooth connectivity range.
2. Logitech’s G560 Gaming Speakers

Specs & Features
Size | 10” x 8.1” x 15.9” |
Freq. Response | 40Hz – 18KHz |
Sensitivity | 84dB |
Power | 240W |
Speaker Dimensions: | 148mm x 166mm x 118mm (Satellites) 404mm x 255mm x 207mm (Sub) |
Connectivity Options: | USB, 3.5mm Jack, Bluetooth 4.1 |
Weight: | 12.10 lbs |
With their G560 Lightsync computer gaming speakers, computer technology giants Logitech once again revolutionized the gaming industry. These speakers’ main selling point is their capacity to project color-themed lighting onto a wall behind them in response to your on-screen activity. It is truly amazing that this is done without sacrificing sound quality!
The G560 Lightsync system was exclusively created by Logitech with the user’s comfort and overall experience in mind. The interactive media experience is further improved by sophisticated light synchronization methods and 3D audio simulation technology. For front or rear projection, the user can choose from more than 16.8 million lighting configurations.
The tabletop satellites are portable and lightweight, but for the best audio quality and balance, it is advised that the subwoofer be positioned dead-center between the two “top” drivers.
Sound Quality & Performance
There are no issues with the G560 computer speakers’ audio quality in my opinion. I can guarantee a thoroughly immersive and thrilling experience because they built the speaker with gaming in mind.
The downward-firing subwoofer provides enough thunderous rumble in addition to quality, powerful drivers fed through 240W Peak RMS, and the desktop satellites are positioned at a tactical angle to enhance realism by simulating a 3-dimensional surround sound environment.
Naturally, viewing movies on your computer will produce excellent results with these specifications. I wouldn’t advise using these at a great distance or for music. It’s significant to remember that Apple Mac OSX computers cannot use the simulated surround sound system.
Connectivity Options
Devices can be connected to the G560 Lightsync via Bluetooth, USB, or a 3.5mm jack. The Logitech Easy-Switch allows for simultaneous pairing and switching of up to 4 devices.
What You Will Receive
- Two satellite speakers
- One subwoofer with a power cable
- USB cable
- User documents
Conclusion
Overall, the Logitech G560 computer speakers are a superb set of speakers that will unquestionably satisfy the majority of needs and show to be durable. Don’t read any further if you’re looking for an improved interactive media system! The Z407 Bluetooth Speakers from Logitech are a fantastic set of 2.1 monitors if the G560 system feels a little overwhelming to you. These have full wireless remote control functionality and Bluetooth connectivity with a strong line-of-sight pairing strength of up to 30 meters. They are available for a much lower price but lack the synchronized light features and 3D-style audio.

The Harman Kardon Soundsticks III, which were proudly made in the USA, is a coveted audio product for a number of factors. The first thing that catches the eye is its distinctive futuristic appearance! The speaker and subwoofer set is regarded as a turning point in Harman Kardon’s development. To produce crystal-clear audio, the device has a total of eight full-range speakers and one active downward-firing subwoofer. It requires little wiring and is compatible with a variety of media devices.
Sound Quality & Performance
The cutting-edge, futuristic-looking speaker system has two line array-style speaker arrangements, each with four drivers on each side. As a full-range replication device, each driver functions. You can change the angle of the satellite to suit where you will be listening.
In order to minimize room characteristics in the mix, the subwoofer produces low-end rumble by directing such frequencies toward the floor rather than the walls or room. On the device, itself are touch-sensitive buttons for the volume and mute controls, which make it simple to change volume levels on the fly.
Connectivity Options
The SoundSticks III speaker system from Harman Kardon can only be connected using a stereo 3.5mm jack output. Those who want to use the device with Bluetooth or USB connections may find this disappointing, but when setting up for your computer or home entertainment center, at least consistent quality can be anticipated.
What You Will Receive
- One pair of Soundsticks III satellites.
- One powered subwoofer module.
- One power cord.
- One set of audio cables.
Conclusion
The Harman Kardon Soundsticks III speaker system has an attractive design and overall good sound quality. Sound Quality & Performance
Two small satellite speakers and a subwoofer make up the Creative Pebble Plus 2.1 computer speaker system, which will sound surprisingly full-bodied for its size. Your overall listening experience is enhanced with more depth and power thanks to the standalone downward-firing subwoofer.
Connectivity Options
The Creative Pebble Plus 2.1 setup can only be connected to this speaker using a 3.5mm auxiliary cable or jack, which is a drawback. Sound Quality & Performance
For all applications, Bose professional speakers always promise a full-bodied, immersive, and crystal-clear sound quality. Bose has placed emphasis on creating a wide soundstage to “open up” the listening experience and increase the sense of distance and immersion. Stereo spread is another area of focus. The aux input allows you to extend media beyond what your computer can provide by connecting a second device. A 3.5mm headphone output is also built into the speakers for simple connection without the need to constantly unplug and replug your speaker system. Sound Quality & Performance
You really can’t get much better than the Eris 3.5 in terms of sound quality considering the cost, ease of use, and versatility. It’s important to note that the manufacturer created these speakers with the least amount of tonal coloration and enhancement possible. Difference Between a Computer Speaker And a Bookshelf Speaker
As they are quite similar in many ways and frequently used interchangeably, the two are easily confused. However, there are a few significant variations between the two speaker types that can significantly influence your purchase choices.
Bookshelf Speakers
compact loudspeakers intended for use with a home theater system, a music setup, or other similar setups. They are always created and constructed by audio companies and feature premium parts that serve as a bridge to an audiophile-grade listening experience.
Computer Speakers
Computer companies are the main producers of computer speakers and generally speaking, they do not perform as well as “professional” audio products. This does not mean, however, that most computer speakers will not offer a pleasurable listening experience for the majority of daily uses.
Bluetooth vs Corded Computer Speakers for Gaming
I personally advise installing a wired system in your home for any application. A wireless speaker system might be worth buying if you transport your PC setup or laptop frequently enough to justify it. However, when dealing specifically with gaming applications, you might encounter some latency or ‘cuts’ that could impair your ability to focus and maintain your momentum. It all depends on your personal taste and the purposes you intend to use your computer speaker system.
What is Frequency Response?
The capacity of a device to reliably represent a signal passing through it is what we mean by frequency response. The number of times a sound wave goes through a cycle in one second is called a frequency, and it is expressed in Hertz (Hz). Higher frequencies cycle more quickly than lower ones.
Approximately 20Hz to 20KHz is the range of frequencies that humans can hear. The frequency response of a device is shown as a figure with a plus/minus sign to indicate variances, or as a graph with fluctuations and accuracy visually represented. A flatter frequency response is preferred in computer speakers when shopping. Visit our frequency response guide for more information.
How Important is a Subwoofer?
A woofer can handle all low frequencies, as was previously mentioned. This is made possible by a larger diaphragm driver, which is frequently constructed using more durable materials like ceramics and harder papers. It is specifically designed to carry such frequencies with greater power and transmit them effectively.
A subwoofer, however, is comparable. The low-end “rumble” is caused by what is known as “sub-sonic” frequencies that are carried by it. Depending on how you plan to use your speaker system, you may need it. I suggest a setup with a subwoofer if you plan to use it for music or gaming so that the bass is amplified. A “sub” can also improve the experience of watching a movie. The additional weight in your sound will be advantageous for practically all applications!
Let’s now look at some typical connectivity options that computer speaker systems offer. These can differ significantly between speakers, so you must confirm that your current equipment is compatible to prevent making additional purchases or running the risk of technical difficulties.
- 3.5mm Jack – This type of jack, also referred to as an auxiliary or “aux” jack, is most frequently found in portable speakers intended for leisure use. Most computers, tablets, smartphones, and stereos will have a 3.5mm jack output. Sometimes an adapter is needed (like with contemporary iPhones), but these are conveniently available. A 1/8th-inch connection or simply a headphone jack are other names for the 3.5mm jack.
- 1/4 inch Jack – The 1/4 inch jack, also referred to as a “guitar cable,” is available in the TS (Tip & Sleeve) and TRS configurations (Tip, Ring & Sleeve). For this article, these terms are not particularly crucial. However, it’s important to be aware that most electronic shops, music equipment distributors, and most online shops that sell speakers, electronics, and music equipment all carry these cables.
- 3.5mm RCA – These are the predecessors to the HDMI cable in terms of television connections, and we have all used them extensively. A group of red, yellow, and white cables known as an RCA cable connects a television to a DVD player, a satellite connection, and occasionally a laptop. On the transmitting end, they come with a variety of connectors. We only need to worry about a 3.5mm to RCA cable in the case of computer speakers because it essentially has two 3.5mm connections on one end and a 3.5mm aux connection on the other (one red and one white)
- USB (Universal Serial Bus) – USB connections are commonplace; they are now a part of our daily lives. The majority of electronic devices rely on USB for power supply, data transmission, and battery charging. If both devices have encoding and decoding capabilities, USB can also transmit audio in real time. When considering computer speaker systems, the main use of USB will be to supply power to the speakers directly, if necessary.
- Bluetooth – The way Bluetooth communicates is by sending radio waves a certain distance, which the receiving device then decodes. Regarding encoding, decoding, transmission speed, signal strength, and quality, Bluetooth technology is available in a number of formats. Bluetooth modes 4.0 to 5.0 are used by the majority of modern devices.
Computer Speakers Buyer’s Guide
Here is a brief buyer’s guide that explains some of the technical terms and characteristics used to describe a set of computer speakers as well as some additional factors to take into account when making a purchase.
Sound Type
There are many different configurations of computer speakers that are each specifically made for one use or a range of uses. A 2.1 setup (one stereo speaker pair plus one subwoofer) can unquestionably improve your gaming, viewing, or listening. Stereo setups are most common because they are all that most people will need.
A surround sound setup could also have a significant impact on the overall experience and help make your chosen media more impressive.
Sound Quality
Easily the most important aspect to take into account when looking to purchase a computer speaker set. Always refer to the technical details, professional opinions, and, if practical, try out a demo of the speakers yourself to evaluate how well they perform when put to the test against your personal entertainment and usage preferences.
Device Versatility
Can I use my smartphone, television, or stereo system along with the computer speakers?
The device’s connectivity options are what really matter. Thankfully, most computer speakers can be powered by a 3.5mm jack cable, which works with the majority of TVs, smartphones, and stereo systems.
Connectivity
In order to make the most of your computer speakers, it is crucial to double-check the connectivity options offered by your potential computer speaker system. There are typically three common options for connectivity/inputs: Bluetooth, USB, and a 3.5mm jack (or “aux” cable). They are all virtually compatible with every computer, television, smartphone, and tablet.
Size
Does it fit on my bookshelf or desk? An obvious but frequently disregarded element! There should be no confusion between speaker dimensions and driver sizes. Fortunately, the majority of computer speaker systems are reasonably portable, lightweight, and small (if necessary)
Audio controls
How do I operate the device? Onboard controls, including power on/off and volume up/down, will be present on every computer speaker system. Many will also include additional controls for subwoofer activation and equalization options, such as bass boosting, dimming (reducing volume at a set level), or controlling the lights of the speakers.
When used for watching movies, participating in live meetings, interviews, or conferences, computer speakers may even have voice command capabilities or remote controls.
Power Source
Always check that the power cables in your new computer speaker setup are compatible with the plugs in your nation or region. Power cables are always included in the box with them.
Drivers Sizes
The size and construction of the speaker driver itself have a significant impact on sound quality and performance, as was mentioned in our introduction to computer speaker systems. In light of your intended uses for your speakers, it is important that you familiarize yourself with these specifications.
Frequency Response
One of the most important features to consider when purchasing any audio-related equipment. In our introduction, we provide more information on frequency response.
Signal-to-Noise Ratio
The amount of unwanted noise that enters your speakers as volume levels rise is measured by the signal-to-noise ratio. This is especially crucial if you’ll be using your computer speakers for virtual meetings or interviews because you might need to turn up the volume on your end to compensate for the other party’s microphone levels, which will amplify system noise.
Warranty
Finally, we like to investigate the product’s warranty policy to make sure that it covers potential factory flaws, damage from shipping, and other minor annoyances.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Can I Use Computer Speakers as Studio Monitors?
For a number of reasons, I strongly advise against using computer speakers as studio reference monitors. First of all, computer speakers have a frequency response that is not nearly flat enough to accurately represent audio and other specifications, such as total harmonic distortion and signal-to-noise ratios, which are insufficiently expert for making knowledgeable mix decisions. The driver sizes of computer speakers are typically not suitable for professional audio work and are not designed with regard to room acoustics and reflections.
Can I Use Computer Speakers On My TV?
Yes, provided that your speakers’ connectivity options work with your television. TV sound is more than capable of being handled by computer speakers.
Can I Use Computer Speakers On My Stereo?
It all depends on the speaker—if your computer speaker system is robust enough, constructed of high-quality materials, has excellent drivers, and can connect without issues, you may be able to use it with your stereo.
Do Computer Speakers Need a Subwoofer?
Once more, it all depends on your intended applications. A subwoofer will only enhance your listening experience if you intend to use your new computer speakers for music, immersive gaming, or movie viewing.
